The post below contains a curated and regularly updated list of recommended mobile apps.

All of the apps listed here are open source and free as in freedom. Links provided below will take you to the F-Droid repository, which is a 'store' for open source apps Android apps. Some of the apps listed here are normally paid, 'pro' applications as per Google Play, but because they are open source, the F-Droid maintainers have compiled them for you from source and you can use them for free.

System

LineageOS

A free and open-source operating system for various devices, based on the Android mobile platform.

If you want microG installed you can also try LineageOS for microG. MicroG requires a patch called "signature spoofing", which allows the microG's apps to spoof themselves as Google Apps. F-Droid is included in our ROM, so you can freely download all the FOSS apps on their repositories. It includes "F-Droid Privileged Extension", which allows F-Droid to install and update apps without the need of user interaction or the unsafe "Unknown sources" option.

For a more seamless transition from a pure Android, it is recommended to start with LineageOS for microG.

The installation instructions are available for each supported device.

You will need the TWRP app to flash a custom ROM to your smartphone.

If you do not want to or cannot use LineageOS, consider using Universal Android Debloater to get rid of all unnecessary bloatware from your Android.

Security & Privacy

AdAway

An ad blocker that uses the hosts file. The hosts file contains a list of mappings between hostnames and IP addresses. When an app requests an ad, that request is directed to 127.0.0.1 which does nothing. There are options to run a web server to respond to blocked hostnames and to direct requests to the IP address of your choosing. You can download hosts files from the app but it is possible to use your own and to add certain sites to the white- and black-lists.

Requires root: Not necessarily. The hosts files is located in /system which is normally read-only.

Blokada

Ad blocker for people who for some reason do not want to root their phones. It establishes a VPN interface, and redirects DNS server traffic to it. The VPN interface filters the traffic, only allowing queries for hosts that are not blacklisted.

Because of this it is more battery intensive than AdAway and makes it impossible to use a real VPN to encrypt your traffic.

RethinkDNS

Say hello to a safer, transparent, and secure Android.

Open: Protects from DNS manipulation typically employed to censor websites, social media, and messaging apps.

Safe: Reveals network activity of installed apps and lets you disable, uninstall, or firewall them.

Secure: First line of defense against spyware, ransomware, and malware that steal personal information and takeover accounts.

Fast: DNS Servers are deployed to 200+ locations world-wide to ensure your internet is as fast and highly available as it can be.

Transparent: Open source and free of any trackers.

Features:

App Firewall: Prevent apps from connecting to the Internet.

A firewall blocks any app connecting to the Internet over Wifi or Mobile data. Since most forms of surveillance require the data to be sent the network to a server, firewalling them effectively mitigates the threat (File Managers, Alarm Clock, Calculator are few such examples of apps that do not require any Internet access to function).

Monitoring: Keep tabs on incoming and outgoing Internet traffic.

If enabled, the connectivity (DNS) logs are collected and analyzed. Automated reports flag previously unknown or suspicious connections, and reveal the extent of attempt to steal data by spyware networks. In our tests, around 60% of the traffic is flagged and reported as being initiated by known spyware. Logs generated are made available in near-real time to the user for their own analysis.Content Blocking: Block spyware, malware and more.

Anti-Censorship: The app encrypts your internet connection to Domain Name System (DNS) server run by rethinkdns with presence in our 200+ locations world-wide. DNS servers are the address book of the internet: A DNS server provides the exact addresses you need to visit a website or open an app.

However, it is common to alter responses sent by DNS servers to block access or redirect to fake websites. By encrypting the connection to DNS servers on your Android device, rethinkdns helps ensure that the results can’t be manipulated, so you can safely access the internet.

AFWall+

Firewall (iptables frontend), based on DroidWall which is no longer being developed. Features:

Requires root: Yes. iptables must run as root.

Hypatia

Hypatia is the worlds first FOSS malware scanner for Android. It is powered by ClamAV style signature databases.

Features:

Near zero battery impact: you'll never notice any impact on battery at all
Extremely fast: it can scan small files (1MB) in 20ms, and even large files (40MB) in 1000ms.
Memory efficient: with the default databases enabled it uses under 120MB.
Regular scan: allowing selection of /system, internal storage, external storage, and installed apps
Realtime scanner: can detect malware in realtime on write/rename in internal storage
Completely offline: Internet is only used to download signature databases, files will never ever leave your device
Persistence: will automatically restart on boot/update
Tiny codebase: coming in at under 1000 sloc, it can be audited by even someone with basic programming experience

LibreAV

LibreAV is an attempt to detect malware in Android devices by utilising machine learning approach.

OpenVPN for Android

Simply the VPN app for Adnroid. With the VPNService in Android 4.0+ it is possible to create a VPN that doesn't need root access.

WireGuard

WireGuard is a next generation secure network tunnel protocol. This application allows users to connect to WireGuard tunnels. More information may be found on the project webpage.

If your device has a custom kernel containing the WireGuard module, then the module will be used for superior battery life and performance. Otherwise a userspace version will work sufficiently on all other devices.

InviZible Pro

Protect your device from dangerous sites, get rid of annoying ads, get access to blocked resources in your country

In order to start using InviZible Pro, it is enough to have an Android phone with root access. Just run all three modules and turn into Internet invisible person. App Manager

App Manager began by merging the features of App_packages Info (formerly Application Info), ClassyShark3xodus, Activity Launcher and Watt into a single app with material design and dark mode to give a modern look and feel.

Features: - It is free and open source - It has material design (and a nice UI) - It doesn't have any useless permissions - It doesn't connect to the internet - It tries to display as much information as possible in the main window - It lists activities, broadcast receivers, services, providers, permissions, signatures, shared libraries, etc. of any app - It can launch (exportable) activities, create (customizable) shortcuts - It can block any activities, broadcast receivers, services or providers you like (requires root) - It can revoke permissions that are considered dangerous (requires root) - It can scan for trackers in apps and list (all or only) tracking classes (and their code dump) - It can generate dynamic manifest for any app - It can be used to view/edit/delete shared preferences of any app (requires root) - It displays your app usage, app storage info (requires “Usage Access” permission) - Apk files can be shared (hence the use of a provider) - It can be used to clear app data or app cache (requires root)

...and other minor features such as uninstalling/enabling/disabling apps, displaying app installation info, opening on F-Droid or Aurora Droid.

It basically combined the features of five or six apps that any tech-savy person is needed to install in order to have a “life”.

To install it, you need to add the IzzyOnDroid Repository in the F-Droid settings.

Magisk

Magisk is a suite of open source tools for customizing Android, supporting devices higher than Android 4.2. It covers fundamental parts of Android customization: root, boot scripts, SELinux patches, AVB2.0 / dm-verity / forceencrypt removals etc.

De-Bloater

De-Bloater is an application using the power of Magisk to de-bloat unwanted applications systemless-ly. It easily remove system apps from "/system", "/vendor", and "/product" directories.

De-Bloater requires Root Access and a fully functional Magisk environment, including modules, for proper working. As a result, De-Bloater won't work with other rooting solutions as well as in Magisk core-only mode.

Features

TrackerControl

TrackerControl allows users to monitor and control the widespread, ongoing, hidden data collection in mobile apps about user behaviour ('tracking').

To detect tracking, TrackerControl checks all network traffic against the Disconnect blocklist.
This is the same list, that is used by the Firefox browser.
This reveals the companies behind tracking to users
and allows users to block tracking selectively.
This blocklist also allows to expose the purpose of tracking, such as analytics or advertising.

Under the hood, TrackerControl uses Android's VPN functionality,to analyse apps' network communications locally on the Android device.
This is accomplished through a local VPN server, through which all network communications are passed, to enable the analysis by TrackerControl.
In other words, no external VPN server is used, and hence no network data leaves the user's device for the purposes of tracker analysis.

Warden

Warden is a FOSS app management utility.

Features:

Free/Libre software - Has GPLv3 License
Beautiful design - Based on latest material design guidelines
Detects Trackers & Loggers across whole device
Allows to disable all trackers/loggers
Advance profile based app de-bloater

Warden has a static curated list of known trackers (Exodus Privacy) , each app's dex file is read to retrieve the class names, these class names are then matched with the signatures of known trackers & loggers to find them.

Loggers in the context of Warden means all utilities which are used to log user activity on an app or logcat in general. Not all loggers are evil. But few logging tools like ACRA, xLog are very powerful tools that can send user data to devs without user's consent. So do read the app's Privacy Policy, beforehand.

Warden uses su pm to manage the components.

De-Bloater (Requires Root):

Warden provides a profile based de-bloater where a profile is created in a format specified as in this sample scripts You need to place this profile/your custom profile at ExternalStorage/Warden/Profiles to make them appear in app.

De-Bloater is an experimental feature, will improve it over time. Default action for debloating is 'disable' you can configure it to 'uninstall' or 'hide' from settings.

Nuke it! (Requires Root):

Nuke it! is another experimental feature that scans all apps on the device and disables all know tracker components automatically. It also gives an option to export components names per-app basis.

Components here means: Activities, Services, Providers & Receivers

To install it, you need to add the IzzyOnDroid Repository in the F-Droid settings.

Shelter

Shelter is a Free and Open-Source (FOSS) app that leverages the “Work Profile” feature of Android to provide an isolated space that you can install or clone apps into.

Shelter comes with absolutely no advertisement / statistics / tracking SDKs bundled with it. All source code is available in this public Git repository and the sources are licensed under WTFPL.

This app depends on your Android system’s implementation of Work Profile. Some vendor / custom ROMs may have a broken implementation that may cause crashes and even bricking of your device. One such example is MIUI from Xiaomi. I currently provide no support for such ROMs because I personally do not own any of these devices. If you are running Shelter on these ROMs, you are on your own. If any developer out there own these devices and could make Shelter run on these ROMs, please send pull requests and I’ll be happy to merge them.

* Run “Big Brother” apps inside the isolated profile so they cannot access your data outside the profile
* “Freeze” (disable) background-heavy or seldom-used apps when you don’t need them. This is especially true if you use apps from Chinese companies like Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent.
* Clone apps to use two accounts on one device

=== Caveats ===

Shelter is not a full sandbox implementation. It cannot protect you from:

* Security bugs of the Android system or Linux kernel
* Backdoors installed in your Android system (so please use an open-source ROM if you are concerned about this)
* Backdoors installed into the firmwares (no way to work around this)
* Any other bugs or limitations imposed by the Android system.

Also, Shelter cannot create more than 1 work profile on one Android device, and cannot co-exist with any other apps that manages a Work Profile. This is due to the limitations of the Android system, and I can do nothing about this.

EDS Lite

SECURITY

Cryptomator for Android is based on the solid open-source foundation of Cryptomator for Desktop.

File content and filename encryption with AES and 256 bit key length
Vault password is secured with scrypt for enhanced brute-force resistance
Vaults are automatically locked after sending app to background
Crypto implementation is based on the open-source library CryptoLib and is publicly documented

To install it, you need to add the IzzyOnDroid Repository in the F-Droid settings.

Private Location

A simple app to set your location to anywhere in the world, and improve general phone location privacy.

Apps on your phone can require location permissions to work, and make repeated and unnecessary location requests in the background throughout the day.

Setting your location somewhere else will help protect your privacy when using these apps.

This is one of the few location apps that doesn't rely on Google Maps.

NetMonitor

Privacy Friendly Net Monitor monitors active network activity and provides information on the scanned connections and apps. The Connection's local and remote socket information is displayed along with a resolved hostname information and protocol evaluation based on well-known ports. Known un-/encrypted protocols are automatically marked. This app belongs to the Privacy Friendly Apps group developed by the SECUSO research group Universitat Darmstadt, Germany.

UntrackMe

UntrackMe once set by default to open Twitter and YouTube links will transform them into Nitter and Invidious links and delegate the action to another app.

It also supports Google Maps links to transform them into OpenStreetMap links or Geo URI.

The app will detect shortened URLs and will display the full URL before visiting the site.

When sharing a Twitter, YouTube or Google Maps link just pick up UntrackMe to transform it before sharing it with another app.

Available also as a Lite version.

The full version embeds everything that the lite version supports, but will also handle all other links to stripe utm/tracking parameters. As an edge effect, it uses its built-in app picker (which allows to display the full URL before visiting it) for delegating the action.

The lite version handles YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Google Maps and some shortener services to transform these links. It uses the default app picker from the device.

Finder

The main function of Finder is to send the location of the smartphone it's installed on when requested. It also has a "tracker" feature (it can’t be activated remotely, only manually). The application is designed to search for missing people or stolen phones. SMS is used for communication because Internet connectivity may be not available. The app has two ways of determining the coordinates: using GPS (gps must be enabled in system settings, or special permission granted via ADB for auto-enabling), and using mobile and WiFi network info.

Syncthing-Fork

This is a fork of Syncthing that brings major enhancements like:

Individual sync conditions can be applied per device and per folder
Recent changes UI, click to open files.
"Battery eater" problem is fixed.
Android 8 and 9 support.

Syncthing replaces proprietary sync and cloud services with something open, trustworthy and decentralized. Your data is your data alone and you deserve to choose where it is stored, if it is shared with some third party and how it's transmitted over the Internet. Syncthing-Fork for Android is a wrapper for Syncthing that provides an Android UI instead of Syncthing's built-in Web UI. Goals of the fork:

Develop and try out enhancements together with the community.
Release the wrapper more frequently to identify and fix bugs caused by changes in the syncthing submodule
Make enhancements configurable in the UI, users should be able to turn them on and off

Comparison between upstream and fork at the time of writing this:

Both contain the syncthing binary built from the official source at GitHub:syncthing/syncthing
Syncing functionality and reliability depends on the syncthing binary submodule version.
Fork gets along with upstream and sometimes they pick up my improvements.
Strategy and release frequency is different
Only the wrapper containing the Android UI is addressed by the fork.

Nextcloud

DAVx⁵ (formerly DAVdroid) is a CalDAV/CardDAV management and synchronization app for Android which natively integrates with Android calendar/contact apps.

Use it with your own server or with a trusted hoster to keep your contacts, events and tasks under your control.

Productivity & System Tools

Simple File Manager Pro

A simple file manager for browsing and editing files and directories.

Can also be used for browsing root files and SD card content. You can easily rename, copy, move, delete and share anything you wish.

The fingerprint permission is needed for locking either hidden item visibility, or the whole app.

Contains no ads or unnecessary permissions. It is fully opensource, provides customizable colors.

Amaze

Light and smooth file manager following the Material Design guidelines.

RCX - Rclone for Android

A file manager for Android, using rclone for the heavy lifting.

RCX helps you to mange your files, everywhere you go, on your local device or on most cloud providers.

File Management: You can list, view, download, upload, move, rename, delete files and folders

Streaming: Stream media files, serve files and directories over FTP, HTTP, WebDAV or DLNA

Material Design: Supports dark theme, custom primary and accent colors

Automation

Automate stuff on your device by creating rules.

Create rules that are made of triggers and actions. A prominent example would be something like "Mute phone at work".

Briar is a messaging app designed for activists, journalists, and anyone else who needs a safe, easy and robust way to communicate. Joplin is a free, open source note taking and to-do application, which can handle a large number of notes organised into notebooks. The notes are searchable, can be copied, tagged and modified either from the applications directly or from your own text editor. The notes are in Markdown format.

Notes exported from Evernote via .enex files can be imported into Joplin, including the formatted content (which is converted to Markdown), resources (images, attachments, etc.) and complete metadata (geolocation, updated time, created time, etc.).

The notes can be synchronised with various targets including the file system (for example with a network directory) or with Microsoft OneDrive. When synchronising the notes, notebooks, tags and other metadata are saved to plain text files which can be easily inspected, backed up and moved around.

Open Note Scanner

With Open Note Scanner you can capture documents, handwritten notes, arts, shopping receipts, etcetera. It will automatically adjust the image aspect, contrast and save it. It will allow browsing, view and share the scanned documents.

It also supports the automatic scan of preformatted pages with QR Code and action indicators. PDF file with the pages are available on the application website, in the releases section.

In order to work, Open Note Scanner needs to have access to the OpenCV Manager application installed. If it could not find it, it will offer to download it from GitHub or Play Store. It is also possible to manualy install it from the OpenCV SDK for Android, available on http://opencv.org

AnkiDroid

Anki is a program which makes remembering things easy. Because it is a lot more efficient than traditional study methods, you can either greatly decrease your time spent studying, or greatly increase the amount you learn. AnkiDroid is the Android port of Anki, and is compatible with Anki data.

Opt-in synchronization uses the non-free AnkiWeb service by default, but this can be changed in the settings to use, for example, an instance of the unofficial Anki Sync Server).

AnkiEditor

AnkiEditor is an advanced note editor plug-in for AnkiDroid, a spaced repetition flashcard program for Android. AnkiEditor allows you to create basic notes; use WYSIWYG editor that can format text, set text foreground and background color, insert table/link, etc. similar to Anki on PCs.

LibreTube

LibreTube is an alternative frontend for YouTube. It uses the Piped API to load data and play videos and thus needs no YT account and no Google Services on your device.

Differences to NewPipe:

With NewPipe, the extraction is done locally on your phone and all the requests sent towards YouTube/Google are done directly from the network you're connected to and doesn't use a middleman server in between. Therefore Google can still access information such as the users IP address, besides that subscriptions can only be stored locally.

LibreTube takes this one step further and proxies all requests via Piped (which uses the NewPipeExtractor). This prevents Google servers from accessing your IP address or any other personal data. Apart from that Piped allows syncing your subscriptions between LibreTube and Piped which can be used on desktop too. If the NewPipeExtractor breaks, it only requires an update of Piped and not LibreTube itself, therefore fixes usually arrive faster than in NewPipe.

While LibreTube only supports YouTube, NewPipe also allows using other platforms like SoundCloud and media.ccc.de. Both are great clients for watching YouTube videos, it depends on the individuals use case which one fits the own needs better.

The app is a lightweight piece of software reading bigger files stored on your device or SD card: once it is installed, you can select which additional content you would like to download (Wikipedia, Wiktionary, TED talks, etc.) and be ready for when your internet connexion is bad (or need to be in airplane mode)!

Web Media Share

WebMediaShare is an app to browse your favourite media websites (e.g. online streaming sites, online radio stations, etc.) so that you can:

Mandatory permissions used and why:

• Internet, Network State, Wifi State - Frost fetches the pages from Facebook's mobile website. It also needs the network state so as to limit internet usage when you are on a metered network.
• Receive Boot Completed - Frost notifications persist on reboot, and need this permission to be added each time.
• Vibrate - Needed to vibrate phone for notifications; this can be toggled in the settings
• Billing - For purchasing pro and unlocking all of Frost's features

Optional permissions used and why:
(these are only requested when they have to be, and are disabled until then)

• Read/write external storage - Needed to upload photos in a new status and save photos when prompted
• Fine/coarse location - Needed for the check in option if users wish to search for their location

• That's it! No privacy intrusion and no extra demands.

Permissions NOT used and why:

• Wakelock - Frost takes advantage of Android's Job Scheduler, and lets the framework decide when to run background services. Frost therefore doesn't need to constantly run in the background, nor does it force your phone to stay awake.
• Retrieve running apps - Frost has no need to access external apps or see what else is running
• Identity - Frost manages its accounts internally and uses it solely to give you access to your account. We don't depend on other personal information and we don't even save your email.
• Camera - While the camera permission can be added to allow you to directly take photos and upload them, we've decided that it would be best to allow you to do so externally and then share the photo with Frost
